Vaccination programme
19 September 2022All children in the Netherlands have the right to be vaccinated, also children who are not officially registered for whatever reason. An invitation for vaccination is not necessarily needed, however they are sent out by the Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst – GGD (local health authority) according to the RIVM’s Rijksvaccinatieprogramma.
GGD Zuid-Limburg: “In the Netherlands, we think it is important that children get a healthy start in life. Vaccinations against contagious infectious diseases are part of this. By having your child vaccinated, you ensure protection against 12 serious infectious diseases such as whooping cough, tetanus or meningococcus. Vaccination is free and is carried out according to the RIVM’s Rijksvaccinatieprogramma.”
As soon as a child is born or has arrived in the Netherlands and registered with the municipality, RIVM automatically sends vaccination notices and vaccination cards to parents or carers at home. Parents or carers do not have to do anything for this themselves. Children under 4 years of age receive the vaccination at the GGD in their municipality. Older children and young people are usually vaccinated during the 6-monthly vaccination days which are held at venues such as hotels or large conference centres. For this, all children born in a given year are invited. As soon as it is known when the next vaccination round will take place, you will read about it on the GGD Zuid-Limburg website (in Dutch).
This year RIVM extended its HPV vaccination programme to include boys. Girls have been vaccinated against HPV in the Netherlands since 2010. In 2019 the Government of the Netherlands made the decision to extend its HPV vaccination programme to boys as well and lower the age to the year in which they turn 10. In November 2022, the Jeugdgezondheidszorg Zuid-Limburg (JGZ) will organise group vaccinations for children and young people in Zuid-Limburg. Children and young people who are called up for this will receive an invitation from the RIVM by post. The vaccinations are carried out according to the Rijksvaccinatieprogramma and are free of charge.
