Visitors from Abroad

11 June 2024
Are you expecting guests from abroad this summer? Will they stay with you for up to 90 days? Do they need a visa for the Netherlands?

In some cases, you may need to complete a form. This serves as proof that your guest will be staying with you (private accommodation). It can also establish that you will act as a sponsor for your guest (proof of sponsorship). This means, for instance, that you will be responsible for covering their expenses during their stay if they are unable to.

What to apply for

Your guest will only need proof of sponsorship if they do not have sufficient income. They will only need proof of private accommodation provision if their nationality requires it.

You can find the conditions on the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) website. Simply enter your visitor's nationality to access the relevant details.

Who can sponsor

You can only sponsor a visitor from abroad if you live in the Netherlands and meet the income requirements. Please visit the Dutch government's website to learn more.

How to apply

  • Fill in the proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), but do not sign it yet. Use a separate form for each visitor.
  • Book an appointment with the GemeenteLoket (municipal service desk) to sign the form(s). Call 14 043 to book an appointment - press 1 for English.

If you are married or in a civil partnership, both of you must attend the appointment.

What to bring to the appointment

  • acceptable proof of identity for you, and your partner if you have one
  • the filled-in application form for each guest, unsigned.
  • You and your partner (if you have one) will sign the form for each guest at the appointment. A civil servant will legalise the signatures during the appointment. Forms will stay valid for 6 months from the point they have been signed and legalised.
  • Send the signed form(s) to each visitor so they can apply for a visa at the Dutch embassy or consulate in their country.

Download the form and book your appointment at Gemeentemaastricht.nl.
