European Parliament elections

15 April 2024
From 6 to 9 June 2024, citizens of the European Union (EU) may elect members of the European Parliament. In the Netherlands, these elections will take place on 6 June 2024. Every EU citizen over the age of 18 is eligible to vote. If you choose to cast your vote in the Netherlands, you can also vote for Dutch MEPs. Voting is not compulsory in the Netherlands, but it is certainly important because the European Parliament regulates issues that affect us all from the environment and migration to the economy.

Don't forget to register

If you want to cast your vote as an EU international in the Netherlands you must register. To do so, you need to fill in the Y 32 form by 25 April at the latest. You can request this form from the Gemeente (Municipality) where you live. Here is a list of the largest Municipalities here in the region:

After registration, you can vote at any polling station in your municipality. The front of your polling card will tell you where to find them. You must identify yourself using a valid form of identification(ID) at the polling station when you cast your vote.

Who can I vote for?

The Netherlands elects 31 Ministers of the European Parliament (MEPs). This is 5 more than in the 2019 European Parliament elections. This is due to the UK's departure from the EU and because the population in the Netherlands has grown. In total, more than 700 European Parliament representatives will be elected.

Your vote helps determine which members of the European Parliament will represent the citizens of the EU. If you want more information about the different candidates and the main issues, it is definitely recommended to go and watch the Maastricht Debate on 29 April at the Vrijthof in Maastricht. This will be organised for the third time by Studio Europa Maastricht and POLITICO. People aged between 16 and 29 can participate in the debate. For more information visit maastrichtdebate.eu.
