Maastricht Museum

Be surprised by Maastricht's past

On the 1st floor of Centre Céramique, the hidden stories of this special city are told. This is done in Dutch and English, but also in Maastrichts. The timeline of the permanent presentation takes you along five important themes in the city's history. From prehistory to factory town.

Impressive time travel
Starting around 7,000 years ago, with the first permanent inhabitants. From there, you’ll make a time leap to the Romans. They constructed the first bridge over the Meuse River. Then you’ll visit Maastricht in the early Middle Ages (from 500 to 1000 AD): a than political-religious centre. And finally, via the fortified town of the 16th to 18th centuries, you’ll arrive in the first factory town of the Netherlands in the early 19th century.

Un-Dutch city
Until well into the 18th century, Maastricht was more closely linked to the east, west and south than to the Dutch Republic in the north. As a result, Maastricht felt like a piece of foreign country in its own country. It is therefore only natural that in the 20th and 21st century, the city evolved into a European city with a strong emphasis on knowledge and innovation.

Your Maastricht story
The museum's timeline takes you through all the periods mentioned. But there is so much more to tell about the city! Do you have another great story? Share it with them and who knows, it might get a place in the museum.

Please be patient...
